Sorrento rises
along the Southern side of the Naples
gulf in the middle of the Sorrento
coast among a luxuriant vegetation
of lemon, orange and olive trees.
Sorrento was probably founded by the
Phoenicians, colonized by the Grecians
and underwent first the Etruscan and
later the Oscan rule, becoming eventually
a famous holiday resort during the
years of the imperial Rome. In the
Middle Ages it passed from the Byzantine
rule to an independent dukedom, and
hence to the Norman rule until it
became a defence fortress from the
Saracen attacks. According to mythology
Ulysses managed to resist the local
mermaids' calls and still today Sorrento's
historical spell survives unaltered.
Thanks to its mild climate and to
its gardens as well as to its neighbouring
villages, which work as a wonderful
frame to the city, Sorrento has been
magnetizing for ages millions of tourists
hypnotized by the quiet beaches, by
the splendid possible excursions,
by the delicious typical products,
by its famous gastronomy, by the precious
local handicraft, by its closeness
to Capri, Amalfi, Massa Lubrense,
Positano and Pompei, as well as by
its fascinating history present in
every foreshortening, in every church
and in every archaeological site of
the area. |
